How to receive Upwork payments in Nigeria (2026)

Fees checked 23 October 2026 from provider pages and published guides. Upwork's own help pages would not load for me, so confirm in your Upwork settings.

Short answer: most Nigerian freelancers withdraw with Direct to U.S. Bank into a USD account from a provider like Raenest or Cleva, then convert to naira. Upwork charges $2.99 per withdrawal for accounts with a non-US tax address (reported as starting 1 September 2026). The alternatives are a $50 wire, PayPal, Payoneer, or Direct to Local Bank.

Upwork's own fees come first

Before any withdrawal fee, Upwork takes its freelancer service fee. Published guides describe it as variable, from 0% to 15% per contract. Check the figure on each contract, because it comes off your earnings before you withdraw anything.

Upwork also holds money for a while. Per Raenest's guide, fixed-price milestones are held for five days after approval, hourly earnings for about ten days after the billing week ends, and a newly added withdrawal method must wait three days before first use. Add your method early.

Worked example: withdraw $500 with Raenest

Upwork: $2.99 Direct to U.S. Bank fee. $497.01 arrives.

Raenest: deposits under $500 cost $2 flat, leaving $495.01. Converting to naira costs 0.7%, capped at $2.70, so $2.70 here. About $492.31 converts to naira.

Total fees: about $7.69, or 1.5%, before the exchange-rate margin. Raenest's help centre also lists $4 for deposits of $500 and above, and a withdrawal of exactly $500 would arrive just under that line. Raenest advertises some free deposits each month, which this example ignores.

Cleva says it charges nothing on Upwork deposits and has described its naira conversion as low cost, which would leave only Upwork's $2.99. I haven't confirmed that for every payment, so treat it as a best case. To compare other amounts, use the NairaLanded calculator.
